Buying ink for your inkjet printer can be an expensive proposition. Printer manufacturers make most of their profits from the sale of ‘consumables’ – paper and ink for their printers. Replacing the ink cartridge on your inkjet printer with inkjet cartridges bought from the manufacturer of your printer can cost you an average of $40 per cartridge. One way to reduce the expense is by refilling inkjet cartridges rather than replacing them.
A kit for refilling inkjet cartridges will generally cost you about the same as one replacement cartridge for your inkjet printer – but it will contain enough ink in each color to refill your current cartridge 4-5 times. By refilling inkjet cartridges rather than replacing them, you also avoid one of the most frequent irritations known to inkjet printer owners – throwing away inkjet cartridges that are still half full of ink.
Printers use three colors – yellow, magenta and cyan – to create millions of shades and tints of color. Most printer ink cartridges consist of one molded piece that holds each color of ink in a separate compartment. When one color of ink is used up, the ink cartridge can no longer accurately create most colors. Kits that give you the tools and inks for refilling ink cartridges allow you to refill the compartment with the ONE color that is depleted.
A starter kit for refilling ink cartridges costs about the same as one replacement cartridge for your printer. It contains all that you need for refilling ink cartridges – ink, syringe for replacing the inks, and a mini drilling tool to break the seal on the cartridge.
Most printer manufacturers discourage consumers from refilling printer cartridges for a number of reasons. In many cases, they say, their printer cartridges are designed for use with a specific ink – many of them patented. Refilling printer cartridges with a different kind of ink can cause the inkjet nozzles to clog more frequently and the printer head to fail. For best results, always choose a kit for refilling printer cartridges that was created specifically for your make and model of printer.
