Epson cartridges are well known for problems associated with refilling. This is because they are manufactured differently to most other brands of ink cartridges.
Epson cartridges contain a sponge and this is what generally causes problems when refilling as it fails to absorb the new ink.
The biggest problem associated with refilling Epson cartridges is injecting the ink too quickly. This can cause air bubbles in the cartridge so be patient and take your time. You can avoid a lot of problems by refilling your Epson cartridges while they still have about 50% of ink left in the cartridge.
Once you have refilled the cartridge let it sit for an hour. Some say to let it sit for up to a day to enable the sponge to absorb the ink as well as allow for the release of any air bubbles which may have formed. In both cases, ensure that you do not leave your printer without a cartridge as the print head can dry up. Keep a second filled cartridge on hand to use between refills. Once the cartridge is back in your printer, run a few cleaning cycles to get the ink flowing.
If you find that despite the cartridge being refilled the printer still recognises it as being empty then you probably have one of the newer models of printer. The newer Epson cartridges contain a chip which prevents refilling of cartridges. There are however a number of software and hardware tools available which can reset the chip.
