These days, there’s a wide range of third party manufacturers who offer ‘compatible’ printer cartridges that will fit different makes and models of printer. The compatibles generally cost considerably less than inkjet cartridges that are made by the OEM (original equipment manufacturer).

OEMs like Epson claim that their inkjet cartridges are made specifically to work with their own printers to precise specifications with high quality parts and supplies. For best results, they say, use Epson inkjet cartridges with an Epson printer.

The third party manufacturers counter that their products are made to exacting standards to fit and work with the printer for which the inkjet cartridge was made. Thus the inkjet cartridge that they create for an Epson inkjet printer will function just as well in that printer as an Epson inkjet cartridge.

Epson supports their claim that their Epson inkjet cartridges are the best choice to use with their printers with a number of studies that tested the print quality, permanence, usability and number of prints per cartridge of their own Epson ink and Epson inkjet cartridges against a number of third party inkjet cartridges.

Specifically, the tests showed that: In an article published in PC World Magazine, Epson ink cartridges consistently delivered higher quality prints than most third party ink cartridges.

In a study by Henry Wilhelm, a leading authority on photograph longevity, photos printed with Epson ink cartridges were projected to last up to 92 years without fading. The best performing third party ink was projected to last a year before colors showed noticeable fading.

In tests conducted by the Torrey Pines Research Center, the ink used in Epson printer cartridges was shown to clog the inkjet nozzles significantly less often than third party inks. In other tests performed by the Torrey Pines Research Center, Epson inkjet cartridges consistently printed more pages per cartridge than third party ink cartridges made for Epson printers.

Other factors are harder to quantify, though. If quality and permanence of your printed pages is important, it could well be worth it to you to pay a little extra to get genuine Epson ink cartridges for your Epson printer.

Remember the days when your printer manufacturer used to tell you that using a non OEM printer ink cartridge would void your warranty. Well those days are over. In the US legislation has been passed which allows you to use third party products which in this case means you can use a compatible printer ink cartridge.

The legislation passed is known as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act. This legislation states the following:

United States Code Annotated Title 15 Commerce and Trade Chapter 50 Consumer Product Warranties 15 Section 2302 ”

c) No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer’s using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name; except that the prohibition of this subsection be waived by the commission if:

1) The warrantor satisfies the Commission that the warranted product will function properly only if the article or service so identified is used in connection with the warranted product, and

2) the Commission finds that such a waiver is in the public interest.”

What this means to you is that you can use a compatible printer ink cartridge in your printer without voiding your warranty. This can save you money as original printer ink cartridges can be quite expensive. In some cases they can be as much as the printer itself. Buying compatible printer ink cartridges can do the same job but at a fraction of the cost.

Hewlett Packard says they’re serious about the environment, and their corporate policies back it up. They were the first major manufacturer of printers and ink cartridges to encourage consumers to recycle their used ink cartridges. Hewlett Packard’s renowned Planet Partner’s program – which makes it easy for customers to return and recycle used HP inkjet cartridges – has served as a model for other companies.

The program, begun in 1991, educates consumers about the impact of discarded inkjet cartridges on the environment and encourages them to return used HP inkjet cartridges to the company for recycling. Since the program’s inception, more than 64 million HP inkjet cartridges and LaserJet printer cartridges have been recycled.

As of November 2003, HP began enclosing postage paid return envelopes in all HP 56 and 57 HP inkjet cartridges packages. The postage paid and self-addressed envelopes make it easy for customers to return empty HP inkjet cartridges to the company for recycling. The cartridges are processed and recycled into new consumer products.

Customers have been able to return HP LaserJet cartridges since the Planet Partners program began in 1991, using postpaid labels. HP also offers the option of ordering postpaid labels for HP LaserJet and HP inkjet cartridges at their web site.

In addition to leading the way in collecting their used HP inkjet cartridges, Hewlett Packard also is an innovator in making use of recycled plastics in their own products. At least one Scanjet scanner component is made of 25% recycled HP inkjet cartridges and 75% other recycled plastics. The part meets all product specifications for use in new HP products.

Says Pradeep Jotwani, Senior Vice President of Hewlett Packard’s Imaging and Printing Group Supplies, “Environmental protection is a complex undertaking, but the laws of nature are simple. We will provide leadership … with environmentally sound products and creative recycling systems.” With their Planet Partners program and campaign to recycle used HP inkjet cartridges, HP proves that they put their money where their mouth is.

Laser toner refill kits generally contain, amongst other things, a soldering iron, screwdriver, pliers and in some cases a flashlight. When refilling your laser toner cartridges you will obviously also need the toner itself.

Ensure that before you begin to refill your laser toner cartridges that you lay some newspaper down on your workspace. Shake the bottle of toner a few times before opening.

As instructions for laser toner cartridges differ greatly between each model it is important that you follow the instructions provided with your kit carefully. Toner is like a fine powder and can easily blow all over the place if you aren’t careful.
